I've got three books on their way to publication - a two book series that should come out December 2013 and February 2014, and a LONG single book for April 2014 or so. No contracts signed yet so I'm not naming publishers, but I figure when they give you a publication date, it's close enough for at least a preliminary announcement!

AND I've got a fun summer writing project. I want to write a series, centred around a Melrose Place type building in Vancouver's West End. (The building is made up, but the West End is a lovely gay village and I know it well enough to write it pretty well, I think). I want to do novels and novellas, free short stories, all about the different inhabitants of the building and their love lives. Kind of a sexed-up Armistead Maupin, maybe? Well, a different style of writing, obviously - I'm not bold enough to imitate the master! But a similar framework. I hope it works.

I think I'll self-publish it, just for maximum flexibility. I'll try to get one cover image, I think, or at least a common backdrop and font, maybe with different characters in front? Or maybe just a different wash of colour over the image... I don't know. Time to consult some cover artists!

Anyway, I'm excited about the books I've got coming up, and I'm excited about the new series... this writing thing is FUN!

The Knight!

The Knight continues the story begun in The Pawn - this time from Adam's perspective. It's out today from Dreamspinner, Amazon, ARe, and wherever else you can find it!

Things were confusing enough before the revolution, when Adam Challoner was a rich idealist and Remy Stone a jaded prostitute. After months of fighting, Adam has risen to become the leader of the continent. Now he’s responsible for feeding his people and holding the country together.

But without a fight, without a purpose, Remy scrambles to find his place in the freedom of the postrevolution world. When his quest takes him away from the capitol, Adam can’t object. Remy was a slave before the revolution—Adam won’t deny him his freedom now.

Then an attempt on Adam’s life brings Remy back to his side. In his new role as bodyguard, Remy keeps his distance, but neither he nor Adam can ignore the connection between them. For them to be together, Remy needs to free himself from the damage inflicted by his past, and Adam has to fight through the restrictions of his present. But as the political situation deteriorates, Adam and Remy once again find themselves fighting for their lives—and for each other.

Wow, it's been I while since I blogged!

But I'm back with exciting news - today is release day for The Pawn, Book One in a two-book series called Against the Odds.

The official blurb?

Adam Challoner was born a member of the wealthy elite, but he can’t forget that his power and comfort come from the suffering of the vast underclass—people oppressed by the very regime that keeps him safe. Living with that knowledge is uncomfortable to say the least. When Adam meets Remy Stone, his discomfort becomes intolerable.

Get in, seduce his target, give him all he could ever dream of, then get out—that’s Remy’s assignment. No man has ever been able to resist Remy before, but Adam Challoner is unlike any of Remy’s previous clients. In a world where Big Brother is always watching, Remy needs to perform his assigned duties in order to survive, but Adam seems to be as oblivious to that as he is to Remy’s charms.

Luckily, Remy’s determination to accomplish his mission piques Adam’s interest. But just when Remy’s hard work starts to pay off, a rebel bomb attack interrupts their would-be tryst. Unforeseen circumstances force them apart, then throw them back together. And just as they discover new reasons to live, they realize some things are worth dying for.

The less official blurb?

This one took a long time to write, but I’m really pleased with where it ended up. The dystopic setting was a bit of a challenge, but at its core the book is absolutely a love story. I’m really looking forward to its release and I hope everyone enjoys reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

It's available now at Dreamspinner Press and should be available at other outlets sometime today or tomorrow.

There are already a couple reviews posted, too!

I mean it this time... this is IT! Everyone is happy, and they will damn well stay that way!

But if you want to check in on the boys, they're free at ARe, $.99 at Amazon. Just some Xmas shmoop (with a TINY dose of angst).

Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!

But be careful, there's GIRL COOTIES in it! (I really like this heroine - she's made mistakes, but she's trying to move on. And she had GREAT taste in men!)

What could be worse than having a long-over affair with your boss—the governor—hit the headlines? Professional and personal exile. Banished from the state capital to ride out the media storm in Shadow Valley, Montana, Megan Archer is tasked with promoting cooperation between local police and the federal agents investigating the area's drug trade.

When she's rescued from a near-drowning by handsome Joe Cody, Megan thinks things might be looking up. Until she finds out that her savior is an alleged drug kingpin and head of a notorious crime family. Yes, Joe has an edge, but the attraction between them is too intense to resist. She refuses to believe that the guy who saved her is a criminal.

Megan has a responsibility to the law, but in this case a job well done might mean Joe's downfall. And as Megan uncovers more secrets, it becomes clear that Joe's not the only one in town who can't be trusted. Something's rotten in Shadow Valley...

Buy from Carina, or good ol' Amazon, or ARe, or B&N... or hunt around and see if it's at your favourite e-book seller...

Oh, and did I mention that there's an Audible version available, too? I'm not 100% sure about the narrator, to be honest, but that might just be because I have a serious problem with hearing my stuff read out loud. The Shying Away audio book was impossible for me, so quite possibly that's what's going on here, too!

Anyway... YAY! New book!

Cover art by April Martinez

Nick Colton was a spoiled rich kid when he ran away from Seattle, leaving his best friend and lover Alex Diaz behind. Ten years later, he’s back.

He says he’s there to donate bone marrow for his half-sister, but Alex knows there’s more to it than that. Alex wants to protect himself and everyone else from Nick’s plans, but he needs to spend time with the man in order to figure out what he’s up to. And the more time they spend together, the more Alex realizes that his own attraction to Nick is far from resolved.

Nick is bent on revenge, Alex is trying to maintain his straight and conservative lifestyle, but neither of them can forget what they used to have and what they might, someday, be able to have again.

This one is my first serious attempt at self-publishing. It's been fun, although there have certainly been some frustrations!

I hope you guys like it. It should be available most places, eventually, but for now, it's at ARe and the Big A...

Grrrrr...

So my first self-published title (Poor Little Rich Boy) is scheduled for release on September 20, which SEEMS pretty straightforward...

Except it's not. All the different distribution channels take a different amount of time to take the book from "submitted" to "available". Amazon, of course, is one of the fastest ones.

So if I wait until September 19 and submit to all the channels at the same time, the book ends up being available at Amazon on September 20, and nowhere else until weeks later. Which, of course, contributes to the Amazon monopoly that, in my opinion, is bad for everybody.

But the timelines for the other distributors are imprecise, so if I pre-submit to them, hoping to have books available everywhere by the release date, it actually ends up with the book available from some distributors quite a bit BEFORE the release date. For example, in order to hopefully have the book available for Kobo and Nook by September 20, I had to upload to Smashwords yesterday... so the book is now available from Smashwords directly, but I still don't know if it'll be out on Kobo or Nook by the release date... Aaaaargh. I'm too OCD for this crap!

Don't even get me started on the problems with trying to time the print version.

Just one more way that self-publishing has its own set of challenges. I've enjoyed the experiment, and I may do it again at some point, but I don't see myself walking away from the traditional publishing structure anytime soon! It's just too nice to be taken care of.

Ideas?

I'm hoping for a not-too-traumatic reason for someone with a six-ish year old son to not go to his planned family Xmas.

The family is close by, the person with the son was planning to go, but at the last minute was unable to. It's in California, so weather won't likey be a factor, and I want the person and his son to be free to travel to another Xmas celebration.

I'm wondering about Chicken Pox? Like, if the kids in the extended family all came down with it, maybe the dad wouldn't want to expose his six-year-old? But I've heard of some people so eager to get the pox over with that they deliberately expose their kids to it, so maybe the dad wouldn't stay away.

Any other ideas?

I'm working on my Dark Horse Christmas story. It was SUPPOSED to be a cross-novel mix, having characters from one story interact with characters from a different story, but I couldn't think of conflicts for most of my guys to have. For most of them, their HEA is FIRM, damn it, and I couldn't think of ways to shake them from their HEAs that wouldn't be either out of character or way too traumatic for a fluffy Xmas story.

But my Dark Horse boys always give me an extra serving of drama. It's still not going to be an angst fest, I don't think, but there's stuff going on, at least.

Now, who do we need to see in the story?

Dan, Evan and Jeff, obviously, with BABY!
Tat
Chris
Ryan
Anna
Robyn
maybe Taylor? was that his name? Dan's pretty-boy ex, with the son.
anyone else?

When Peter Carr’s company sends him to Southwestern Ontario to sweet-talk the town into agreeing to a gravel quarry proposal, he welcomes the challenge. Technically he’s a lawyer, but really he’s a problemsolver. He just never expected the problem to be Caleb Sinclair, the passionate but introverted artisan carpenter who lives next to the proposed quarry site.

“Know your enemy.” That’s Caleb’s philosophy. And trying to turn fertile farmland into a gravel pit earns Peter the title of “enemy.” Caleb loves that land, and if he has to make peace with his homophobic neighbors to make war on Peter, so be it. Except knowing his enemy doesn’t turn out anything like he expected. Peter’s not the fairy-tale monster—he just might be the first step to happy ever after.

Look for it at Dreamspinner, Amazon, ARe - wherever you shop for e-books, really!

Whee?

I've spent most of the day doing writing-related stuff (I've got a new release coming out tomorrow, so I need  to get my half-assed promotion tools (like, maybe a Tweet? If I'm feeling ambitious?)) in gear. And I rearranged my office... not writing, but good for writing. And I've been coordinating the 'review requests' for the self-published book I'm trying. (By coordinating I mean trying to figure out who has ever reviewed any of my books so I can be sure to send a request to them. That's about it.)

I just get in weird writing moods sometimes. I took a few days off because I had family in town, and it's hard to get back in gear. Sigh. Maybe some wine will help!

Room to Grow, my latest m/m novella, is out from Samhain today! Yippee!

Photobucket

Until it’s freed from the closet, love will only wither on the vine.

Cole Wheaton is out in every sense of the word—out of the closet, and recently out of a bad relationship. He hopes the new contract to design a garden for the McLeans will be the distraction he needs to get his life back on track, but there’s something about David McLean that intrigues him…and sets off warning bells.

Somewhere in the middle of a bonding chat with the passionate landscape designer, David realizes he’s attracted to Cole. It’s nothing new—he’s secretly been acting on these impulses for a while. But there’s something different, something stronger with Cole that tells him acting out with Cole will be a life-changer.

Determined not to saddle himself with another closet-case, Cole does his best to resist the temptation David presents. But David, watching Cole’s easy acceptance of his own sexuality, realizes it’s time to stop living a lie. An open marriage and cheap one-night stands aren’t enough, not anymore.

Cautious friendship grows into affection…then passion. But until they’re both ready to cut ties to their pasts, the obstacles still walling them apart could be too high for love to breach.

It's available from Samhain, Amazon, and probably other places too! And it's already gotten a lovely review, at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews. I'm really excited about this one - I hope you guys like it!

It should go without saying.

But, as recent nonsense has shown us, it apparently doesn't. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, save yourself hours of aggravating reading and don't ask!)

So, for the record, speaking as an author: Reader reviews are interesting. Reader reviews are useful. Reader reviews are occasionally truly touching and gratifying, and sometimes quite painful. But, mostly, as an author: reader reviews are none of my damned business.

I appreciate positive reviews and have made several good online friends because of them. Negative reviews can really sting. But that's not the readers' problem, it's mine.

Readers write reviews for themselves, for their friends, for a circle of readers with common interests, for strangers... it's none of my business if you're writing reviews in order to please your pink Martian overlords. The one person the reviews are not for is me.

So, positive or negative, formal or flippant, benign or cruel - your reviews are not a form of bullying. I appreciate the time you've taken to buy (hopefully) and read my book, and however you want to express your thoughts on that book is absolutely up to you.

Like I said, it should go without saying.

If you're interested in m/m fiction and you're not already a member of the Goodreads m/m group, you might want to consider joining. They have a huge free fiction thing going on right now: short stories, novellas, even a couple novel-length efforts, I'm pretty sure, all inspired by reader-supplied photos and prompts.

My angsty little effort is available through Goodreads, or from ARe if you aren't the Goodreads type. Reviews at either site are appreciated - the free stuff is designed to be promotional, so the more attention it gets, the better! (Well, the more attention my non-free stuff gets, the better, too, but... you know. I appreciate reviews. That's all I'm sayin').

There is an absolute craze going through some of the online writers' communities with people trying to get "likes" for their Amazon author pages. Apparently something good happens? Maybe? But if you don't forward the message to ten friends within three days, someone you love will... wait, that's chain letters. The Amazon page is, possibly, different.

Anyway, here's a picture of a little girl kissing a horse. I didn't take the picture, and I don't own it. If you DO own it, and don't want me using it, let me know and I'll remove it.

But in the meantime... if you like  the picture, you could show your appreciation by clicking "Like"... but not HERE! You can click Like at my Amazon author page!!! (Yeah, I'm trying to use a picture of a happy child/animal interaction to manipulate an Amazon ranking program that may not even exist. Whatcha gonna do about it?)

Ooooh!!!

The Shying Away audio book is on Audible! It's been on the Dreamspinner site for a while, and it's not on iTunes yet, but I don't care about either of those because I buy MY audiobooks from Audible, so having it available there is what makes it feel real!

Yay! I have an audiobook!

June 10 marks my second anniversary of being a published author!  Yay!!! Fun was had by all!

However, in looking back over my illustrious career I have noticed that not only do I have a painful compulsion to name ALL my male characters Dan or Danny, I also seem to have an issue with titles. Out of fourteen novels or novellas I have Shying Away, Shining Armor, The Shift, and Shadow Valley. Does someone have a bit of an obsession with Shhhhh? Shure seems like it! Also, my first m/m novel? Dark Horse. My first YA novel? Dark Houses. Clearly, I have issues.

But, whatever! Two years of publication! Thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way - I'm having a blast.

I do love getting new covers!

I don't think there's an official blurb for this one yet, but...

As punishment for a romantic indiscretion, Megan Archer is sent to Shadow Valley, Montana, with an impossible task.  Representing the governor, she’s expected to promote cooperation between the local police who want to focus on the meth trade, and the federal agencies who only care about the marijuana coming across the Canadian border.  The one thing that everyone agrees on is that Joe Cody is bad news.  He’s an alleged murderer, suspected drug king pin, and the achingly gorgeous man who saved Megan from a car wreck her first day in town.

As Megan digs deeper into the police conflict, she uncovers evidence of police corruption, but wants to be sure of the facts before she makes an official report.  She waits too long.

Cut off from civilization in the remote Montana wilderness, Megan has to fight against the authorities she’s spent her life respecting.  Her only ally is Joe Cody, who has his own reasons to distrust the police.  She knows  that’s not enough; their common enemy shouldn’t be enough to make them friends, and their mutual attraction shouldn’t be enough to make them lovers.  But this is Shadow Valley.  If Megan wants to get out alive, she needs to stop paying so much attention to what she knows, and start going by what she feels.
